Why an iPod?
In October 2025, I began using my old iPod that I had as a kid. She's a pink iPod Nano 3rd Generation (from 2007). I had enough of using Spotify... I hated listening to ads and refused to pay for premium. Aside from that, Spotify has a whole host of other issues from not adiquately compensating artists to hosting AI music and more. During this time, I was also preparing to switch to a flip phone, so I needed a music solution other than streaming. When I started using the iPod, I never looked back!
Spotify premium costs about $13 USD per month. In a year, you would pay $156 to listen to music that you don't even own. If the average album costs $15 USD, then you could by 10 albums a year and still have a little left over. Not to mention that now they're yours... forever.
I highly recomend that everyone starts self curating their music library again. Since you're here, on the indie web, you likely agree. You don't need an iPod. Even the cheapest mp3 player will do. Your music should just be yours.
